Structured Workplace Learning (SWL)

Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) allows a student in Years 10, 11 or 12 to acquire skills and knowledge within an industry setting as part of their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)/Vocational Education and Training (VET) or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) studies.

VET and VCAL programs link general and vocational education. They allow students to combine classroom learning with hands-on industry training and practice in the workplace.

To see a full list of what VET programs are offered in the Geelong region please click on the VET Programs link on the side menu .

Students can undertake SWL for one day a week over a number of weeks or in blocks of one week at a time.

The host employer is required to pay the students a minimum of $5 a day (exemptions apply, please contact GRVEC for further information).  WorkCover and Public Liability is covered by education sectors, an Arrangement Form must be completed and fully signed by all parties before the placement commences for this coverage to be in place.  Schools will issue this form.

During the work placement a student needs to be supervised and to follow the host employer's occupational safety and health arrangements as well as being engaged in tasks relating to their particular course of study.  Students bring a logbook with them to the workplace to record activities and attendance.

GRVEC help facilitate SWL in many varied industries such as; automotive, animal studies, fashion design, building & construction, childcare, dance, fitness, engineering, equine, hairdressing, hospitality, music, beauty therapy, information technology, retail and many more.

For an employer SWL allows you to host a student who has a real interest in your industry and through their VET studies has the potential to be productive in your workplace in a short amount of time.  SWL is a great way to select students for employment opportunties such as apprenticeships and traineeships and help develop your current employees' training and supervision skills.

Please contact Kylie or Bec at GRVEC to discuss your options.

If you are a student and would like to see what SWL placements we have on offer, please see your school VET or VCAL Coordinator and ask them to show you our Placement Web Portal.  This portal will allow you to search for a SWL opportunity in your area.
